One Moment

One moment in time - no words - capturing a moment from my week. A simple, special, extraordinary moment. A moment I want to pause, savor and remember.

A favorite moment from this week. I'm linking up with Amanda at SouleMama.

  1. Hello! I saw your blog address on Instagram and thought I'd check it out... as lovely as expected. :) I have so enjoyed your photography and thought I'd send a question your way as I have just been given my first slr camera and am trying to figure out where to start. Do you have any resources you'd recommend for a beginner? Warmest wishes ~ Miriam(mimkujak)

    1. Miriam. I am SOOOO sorry it has taken me so long to reply...it's been a bit crazy around here. Anyways, you wrote that you got your first SLR. I'm guessing digital not film? I have and advantage in that my husband is a photographer and I usually can go to him for help, however, I like this website for helpful general-info tips: http://digital-photography-school.com If you need info about processing I really learned a lot from Kim Klassen's Roundtrip class (using LightRoom and Photoshop). She also offers a class (free, I believe) on Photoshop. Here is a link to her site: http://www.kimklassencafe.com/thecafe I've also just Googled what ever it is I'm trying to figure out. The best suggestion I can give you is just use that camera as much as you can. Read the manual--yes, I know everyone says to do that...it does help...if for nothing more than to know what all the buttons do:)

Another site that I really like and have picked up a few ideas/hints from is: I Heart Faces http://www.iheartfaces.com they have some free tutorials on their site. I haven't done them all but the few Iv;e done have been helpful.

A few books that have really helped me are:

Tracy Clarks's book Elevate the Everyday It is not technical at all but it gave me the "permission" I needed to take photos that weren't technically perfect but still spoke to my heart.

Scott Kelby's Lightroom book (just Google Scott Kelby and his book(s) should pop up). I really love Lightroom for organizing my photos. If you don't have it and are thinking of getting it then I highly recommend reading his book THEN setting up your LR. If you already have LR then the book is still VERY helpful navigating ALL the things LR can do. And if you read the book in conjunction with taking Kim Klassen's classes you'll be doing great! I also recommend his books for Photoshop. And I highly recommend PS if you do lots of post processing. Or even Photoshop Elements...both are very good programs.

OK--that's what I came up with off the top of my head. If you have anything specific you want to ask, feel free. I shoot almost exclusively in Aperture Priority with as low an F-stop as I can as I do so love those dreamy, out-of-focus-background images. I am really just getting comfortable in shooting in manual...it still scares me a bit, so I try to use it when I have time to take a shot (not at those one of a kind, over in an instant, never to happen again moments). I hope you are having fun with your camera. Let me know if you need anything else!

      Laura
